Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness
Written by: Cari Herschman, LPC

October is Pregnancy and Infant Loss awareness month. As an organization that supports moms through all walks of life, this is a topic that undoubtedly impacts many of us, either personally or through a loved one. Yet, it’s also an experience that often comes with silence, stigma, and isolation.
This month is an opportunity for us to acknowledge this difficult part of motherhood and share support. 1 in 4 women experience a pregnancy or infant loss. Whether your loss was recent or many years ago, your pain and loss is valid. There is support available and there are others who understand what you are experiencing.
The risk of depression and mental health issues after a pregnancy or infant loss is over 2 times higher in women who have not experienced a loss. That doesn't mean that everyone who has a loss will develop PTSD, depression, or anxiety. Many people heal and cope substantially with time, but it means that your emotional response deserves the same legitimacy as the physical recovery.
On October 15, an international “Wave of Light” takes place around the world. It’s a time to remember the pregnancies and babies that have been lost, and support the families who have grieved those losses. Whether you’ve lost a child or want to support your fellow moms, we invite you to participate by lighting your own candles at home at 7pm on October 15th, 2026.
